As GM Goes, So Goes Manufacturing

Published 06/02/09 Dustin Ensinger - Print Article
E-mail - editor@economyincisis.org

It used to be said that "As GM goes, so goes the nation."  Perhaps a more fitting axiom for today's economic climate is, "As the auto industry goes, so goes American manufacturing."

It would hold then that the steel industry is in serious trouble.  With U.S. auto sales slumping below 10 million per year and General Motors and Chrysler in the midst of bankruptcy, steel sales can be expected to drop off even more.

"A huge portion of the steel ... goes into the automobile industry," Leo Gerard, president of United Steelworkers told The Detroit Free Press. "When the Wall Street Ponzi bubble burst, and the country went into economic freefall, it became very clear to us how intertwined industrial manufacturing is with the auto industry." Americans 'Don't Care' About GM, Bankruptcy-Stung Detroit Says

Jeff Plungis and Keith Naughton
Tuesday, June 2, 2009

General Motor Corp.'s reign as the world's largest automaker made Detroit a proud city, said Ted Dobski, a retired GM executive from nearby Beverly Hills.

With its filing for bankruptcy yesterday, GM means something else to its hometown, he said.

"Bankruptcy is an incredible stigma," said Dobski, 65. "I hate to see GM connected with that. GM is such an icon. GM is this area. It's Detroit."

Detroit residents are struggling to come to grips with what would have been unthinkable as recently as 2004, when GM was completing a 10-year run in which it earned $41 billion, milking profits out of jumbo sport-utility vehicles like the Chevrolet Suburban and Silverado pickup trucks.

From the GM gift shop at the airport, the Automotive Hall of Fame near Ford Motor Co.'s headquarters in Dearborn to Diego Rivera's 1930s "Detroit Industry" murals at the art museum, autos and Detroit became synonymous, and making cars more than just a way of getting a paycheck.

Americans 'Don't Care' About GM, Bankruptcy Stung Detroit Says 250509BANNER

"Cars are in your blood around here," said Mike Smith, director of Detroit-based Wayne State University's Walter Reuther Library of Labor and Urban Affairs, named for the former United Auto Workers president who helped negotiate the pay and benefits that made autoworkers the envy of blue-collar employees across the country.

"It's a sad blow to our egos," Smith said.

U.S. Government = Financial Criminals

Martha Stewart served five months in prison for insider trading. Walter Forbes, once chairman of the Cendant Corp. received a sentence of 12 years and seven months for committing fraud costing investors over $3 billion. David Jacobs, former president and owner of Chicago-based Northwestern Plating Works (NPW) was given the maximum jail time of 46 months for improperly storing hazardous wastes and embezzling some $830,000 from an employee pension plan. This list of "financial criminals" is infinite.

It seems that if your a normal citizen and you commit a financial crime, you will be held at least somewhat accountable for your actions. However, not an eye has been blinked at the United States Government. Looking through the past 100 years, they have passed an unconstitutional income tax, made us pay increasing rates toward social security even though it's bankrupt, incorporated a tax on just about everything we do, confiscated all gold (in 1933) and eliminated value-based currency, allowed a central banking system to gain complete control of our money supply, to name a few. Today, they're opening wide up throwing our money in the toilet in trillions with the "bailouts" of failed businesses. When do we hold the Government accountable for costing us so much money?

This administration and the two previous alone have cost the average person such an enormous debt it's unbelievable. We couldn't even tally it up because they've spent so much into the future that we can't even begin to see the ripple effect these idiots will have caused in our eventual lives. However, they have us so confused about how bad this really is. They put drones on TV everyday to tell you that "things are good" or "coming around". We never really consider the possibility that the few hundred people in Washington are simply scheming much like any of those mentioned above.

On the contrary, people usually end up defending them. I just spoke to a woman yesterday that says, "This is all Clinton's fault and Bush is getting such a bad wrap for it." See, people just can't put it all together. This is such a common response from some and it makes me sick. What if Clinton, Bush, and Obama are merely the same? I mean, they have pretty much the same cabinet. They just play musical chairs and you have a dictatorship with a new face. Why is that so hard for people to see? I just can't understand why people are so willing to ignorantly "stand up" for such manipulative cowards that have stolen directly from you, your children, and your grandchildren.

The amount of money that these financial criminals have gotten away with stealing, losing, and devaluing is staggering. The very fact that they speak about bailouts is pure evidence that they have sunk our ship. In this nanny state we live in, don't we entrust our politicians to safeguard our economy and defense? So how can we not consider them failures at this point? It's not like the car companies have shored up because people just don't want to buy cars. The bank loans are not getting repaid and it's not because people banded together and finally just said the hell with it. We are in this position because of two reasons: 1.) the US Government passed all these free trade agreements that shipped our jobs overseas and 2.) the US Government allows a private institution to control our money supply.

This is not to mention all the ridiculous spending they've gotten away with. I mean they don't even have to balance a checkbook. We have allowed them to run deficits for as long as I've been alive and they just smother anybody that tries to point it out. Then they get on TV with a kermit the frog puppet and the sheep of America smile and go on with their lives. We have become a completely idiotic, lazy, and, frankly, a sorry society. If we held the Government to some standard, we'd have no choice but to fire them all and start over. Maybe that's exactly what we need. They're not going to do it to themselves so maybe it's time for you to stop being such an ignorant dumbass and speak up. In this case, you are the ignorant investors losing tons of money from the inside trader. They only thing is, you're going to have to be the one to call them on it. Do you have the mental capacity to do that?

Illegal Mexican Drugs Spreading Throughout US Like Cancer
The problem is that many of our politicians are grammatically challenged. They can only conjugate verbs in the first person singular. The three most important people they know are "Me, myself and I." They couldn't care less about the security of our nation or the lives.......

Excerpt: "In a sense, it may be said that the CIA was a stepchild of Nazi Germany. As noted by Joseph Trento in Prelude to Terror (2006), its founder, Allen Dulles, had done business with the Nazis before World War II. Dulles served in the O.S.S. in Bern, Switzerland. From 1945 to 1947, preceding the creation of the CIA, Dulles ran his own private and entirely illegal intelligence service in which he 'began a massive ex-Nazi recruitment' campaign, using a State Department refugee office as a front. ...
